Program information
17c起草社区鈥檚 one-year Family Medicine-Enhanced Skills: Family Practice Anesthesia (FPA) residency enables family physicians to deliver competent, compassionate anesthesia care as part of their practice. The FPA program gives trainees the knowledge, skills and sound judgment necessary to provide anesthesia care to low-risk patients undergoing simple procedures, particularly in rural and remote communities.
This program is accredited by the College of Family Physicians of Canada.

- Immersive and innovative training experience with exposure to both tertiary care and community-based anesthesia practice that prepares residents for excellence in both urban and rural settings.
- Highly integrated orientation workshop known as the Foundational Series that includes advanced case-based learning, hands-on skills workshops, and high-fidelity simulation sessions designed to prepare residents to manage both common and rare perioperative emergencies.
- Point-of-Care Ultrasound (POCUS) Workshop that is tailored to individual skill levels, offering personalized learning tracks. These sessions feature multiple live models and instruction by certified faculty, providing an unparalleled hands-on experience.
- Dedicated Transfusion Workshop focused on the safe and appropriate use of blood products, recognition and management of transfusion reactions, and the principles of massive hemorrhage protocols.
- Wide range of high-volume surgical environments, including dentistry, endoscopy, general surgery, ENT, gynecology, obstetrics, orthopedics, pediatrics, plastic surgery, and urology, complemented by unique learning opportunities in regional anesthesia, out-of-hospital surgery, intensive care, and tracheostomy management for complex patient populations, reflecting the diversity of the communities served by our clinical partners.

Residents who complete 17c起草社区鈥檚 FM-ES Family Practice Anesthesia Program will be eligible to receive a Certificate of Added Competence in Family Practice Anesthesia.
Eligibility Criteria
Candidates must meet both the CaRMS FM/ES Match and the in order to apply to the 17c起草社区 FM-ES Family Practice Anesthesia Program. Program-specific application requirements, including the personal letter and reference documents, are outlined in the program description.
Citizenship
Candidates must be Canadian citizens, permanent residents, or protected persons (convention refugees) under the Canadian Immigration and Refugee Protection Act at the time of application, with the exception of Citizens of Indigenous nations, where Treaties allow individuals to work and train across the USA-Canada border, are eligible to undergo postgraduate medical training in Canada.
Training Level Requirement
Candidates must be current residents enrolled in a Canadian family medicine residency program accredited by the College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC), and be expected to complete their PGY2 training on or before December 31, 2027.
Incoming residents are expected to start their FM-ES training on July 1, 2027. Off-cycle PGY2 residents with completion dates between July 1 and December 31, 2027 may be considered on a case-by-case basis and must declare their completion date on the application form and request a late start.
Transfers or Re-Entry
As per the Ontario provincial eligibility criteria, the CaRMS Family Medicine / Enhanced Skills (FM/ES) Match cannot be used for transfers or re-entry.

- Family physicians who have been in full-time practice in Canada for a minimum of 12 consecutive months who are interested in family medicine enhanced skills training at 17c起草社区 may apply through the Ontario Ministry of Health鈥檚 .
The 17c起草社区 School of Medicine currently has clinical partnerships with multiple major training sites:
Residency training will leverage a distributed model which may include training at any of these sites for learning in environments, which include community and clinical settings, urban and rural environments, and inpatient and outpatient settings. While the majority of resident training will be focused in Peel and surrounding communities, additional learning experiences may take place at other training sites within Canada through Inter-University Affiliation Agreements. These agreements are subject to change and result in training at sites other than those that are listed above.
Travel to various locations will be required. Access to a personal vehicle will be beneficial; however, anyone with access to a reliable means of transportation is also encouraged to consider this program.
